Vintage French RARE medal of the Miracle of the Holy Blood. The front of the medal depicts a reliquary of the “The Miracle of the Holy Blood at Bois Seigneur Isaac and is marked in French with: “St. Sang de Miracle Bois Seigneur Isaac” which translates to “Miracle of the Holy Blood in Bois Seigneur Isaac”. The reverse side of the medal is also marked in French around a cross with the words “vraie croix miraculeuse de floreffe 1204 – 1254” which translates to “true miraculous cross of Floreffe 1204 – 1254”.
In the 1100s, the abbot of Floreffe Abbey was gifted with a large piece of the True Cross and in 1204 and 1254, it is documented that blood flowed from the wood on the Feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross. The relic was later moved by the Norbertine canons to a safe place at the monastery at Bois Seigneur Isaac.
The medal is lightweight aluminum and shows signs of age and wear with areas worn smooth (please see all photos and use the zoom feature if necessary).
